Getting Started – Computer Basics for Teachers

globe key on keyboard ‘Technology in education is becoming more of a feature in our schools. Yet, for many teachers, getting started with technology is a daunting task. This course is designed to help the total beginner to get up and running with a computer and provide them with basic digital skills, take their first steps on the Internet and start using email.’

Course Modules

  1. How to start the computer and understand the desktop
  2. Common Software Programmes and how to organise and arrange files
  3. Introduction to the World Wide Web
  4. Using web-based email services
  5. How to stay safe online

Technical Requirements

The course is easy to follow, fun, supportive, and provides new skills in a relaxed environment. A free TeachNet email account will be set up for any teacher that requires it.
All our courses require broadband Internet access (Min of 1mb recommended).

Course Objective

Teachers with little or no prior knowledge will learn how to start using a computer and be confident in using the basic function of the computer including the desktop, folders and files, getting on to the Internet and using email.

Expected Outcomes

Teachers will confidently be able to switch on the computer, carry out basic functions, browse the Internet and use a web based email.

Assessment Criteria

The course tutor will review the forum postings, practical work and course reflective learning log completed by the participant to ensure that:

  • Teachers have made reflective postings on how they have got on with the basic functions covered in the course at the end of each lesson.
  • Teachers have sent an email from their email account at the end of the course and includes a link to a website that they have located and described how this is relevant to their class work

Course Duration

Delivered online, this course can be taken anytime, anywhere between Thursday July 1st and Friday 27th August, 2010. Participants will be encouraged to engage meaningfully with course content for approximately 20 hours. Whilst engagement with the course content will be primarily judged on the quality of their contributions, a log of their time spent working on the course will be kept.
